Lighting has always fascinated me. It’s incredible how integral it is to an overall sensory experience, as I recently noticed in a Louis Vuitton resort concept. They skillfully use glass to interact with light, creating stunning visuals. This balance of daylight and artificial lighting sets a mood that enhances fashion. It's exciting to think how lighting has evolved, from mere functionality to a key player in crafting immersive experiences. The future of lighting design truly is about creating moments that resonate.
The Role of a Lighting Designer
In my recent project in Perth, navigating supply issues has proven to be quite the challenge. I specified reliable light fittings from a supplier I've trusted for years, confident in both their performance and support. However, as negotiations unfolded, I found myself caught in the middle of contractor delays and supplier commitments. While it’s tempting to step back, I believe my long-term reputation is at stake. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this tricky balancing act!
Lux Futurum
I was truly impressed by the recent Lux Futurum promotional events held across China. Each gathering in cities like Xian and Shanghai showcased professionalism, with large audiences and expertly guided presentations, translated seamlessly. The atmosphere was electric, and the engagement with sponsors was invaluable. As we gear up for the main event on November 28th, I invite everyone in the global lighting community to share their visionary ideas. Remember, every concept has its merit. Let's reshape the future of lighting together!
China: A Land of a Lot of People…and Opportunities
I’m toured China for the Lux Futurum promo tour, a collaboration with the Virtual Lighting Design Community and the Zhurong Awards. Every visit, I’m amazed by the sheer scale of everything; even in a second-tier city like Nanjing, I encountered a train station with 24 platform gates! The country has transformed from a hub of copiers to a cradle of innovation, especially in lighting design. I can’t wait to see what’s new on this trip!
Pay it Forward
Paying it forward is something I've embraced throughout my career. I’ve always believed that sharing my expertise can help shape the paths of those who follow. When I was invited to be part of the Silhouette Awards, I knew immediately that I wanted to participate. My mentee, Cristina, is enthusiastic about making her mark in the lighting industry. Through this mentorship, I’ve not only guided her but also formed a lasting friendship. My drive to mentor continues to fuel my writing, sharing my vision and experiences.
Paris City of Light
I just witnessed the glorious opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games 2024, held along the river Seine, paying tribute to its beautiful architectures with iconic buildings like the Eiffel Tower and the Notre Dame. It was a master stroke to use the Seine river for this purpose. I had to watch the ceremony as a rerun the next day as it happened in the middle of the night for me in Australia, but it certainly had its iconic moments, all glued together by lighting.
Perth City of Light
As a lighting designer, I recently had the pleasure of experiencing the Lightscape event in Perth's Botanical Garden. The carefully orchestrated lighting effects, synchronised with music, created a magical journey through the gardens. The use of smart LED technology and minimal pathway lighting showcased a thoughtful approach to creating a captivating experience while ensuring comfort and safety. It was a rare moment of peace and magic, set amidst nature, that allowed us to momentarily escape the troubles of the world.
Driven by Responsible Innovation
It is a well-known fact that Signify (formerly Philips) has always been at the forefront of innovation technologies and so are all technologies involved in F1 racing. It is the ultimate sport where the latest light weight materials, smart technologies and innovative concepts are being developed for future use in general public applications. Key synergies mentioned in their press release are the team’s performance and vision to become one of the world’s most sustainable professional sports teams and the drive to enhance the well-being and performance of the drivers and engineers. Signify has already lit up several circuits (Singapore and Las Vegas), which obviously has contributed to a great viewing experience, not only for the public track side but also for the viewers watching the races unfold on their tv screens.
Unexpected Recognitions
I am thrilled to share that our 67 Pall Mall Club's bathroom has been named the best in Singapore by Tatlers! Rockett Studio's incredible work, including our mood lighting, truly shines in this unexpected recognition. It goes to show that attention to detail in every space, even the bathroom, elevates the overall experience. This unexpected honour is a testament to the value of design integrity in every aspect of a project. Truly a delightful surprise!🌟
Surviving in the Business (of Lighting Design)
After 45 years in the lighting design business, I've weathered challenges and celebrated successes. Running a business isn't just about design—it's about managing people, making tough decisions, and learning from mistakes. Finding work-life balance has been a struggle, but leading my team feels rewarding. Yet, the hardest step may be letting go, not just for myself, but for the legacy and the team I've built.
Wine-ding Down
Our Cape Mentelle wine tasting hall project in Margaret River was a proud recipient of the 2024 IES Excellence Award in lighting design. More recently we completed the specialized lighting for a wine storage facility in Perth, called the State Cellars, offering property owners with a lack of storage space to store their prized wine collection in specially conditioned facilities, accessible 24/7. Not only are temperature and humidity controlled, lighting is also kept to a minimum through light sensors switching the warm non-UV containing lighting only when presence is detected.
The Power of Infinity
I'm back from attending three major lighting events in the first half of 2024: Light Middle East in Dubai, Light and Building in Frankfurt, and the Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition. It's fascinating to see the growing influence of the lighting industry, especially in China, and the integration of new technologies like AIoT. The emphasis on knowledge sharing and the theme of "the Power of Infinity" at GILE reflects the exciting direction the industry is heading towards.

Projects That Keep on Giving
I remember the apprehension we felt when we took on the Atlas Bar project in Singapore. The client, scope, and intentions were unclear, but as we delved into the collaboration, it became evident that the client was dedicated to creating the best of the best. Our strategic approach to lighting design transformed the space, earning accolades and prestigious awards. The project's success has brought us widespread recognition and exciting new opportunities. Endless Projects
Reflecting on my experience with long-term projects like the Westin Cam Ranh, I've learned valuable lessons. Key aspects such as time, fees, team dynamics, technology, and warranty challenges have significantly impacted our service delivery. Setting contract expiry dates has become crucial to renegotiate fees and address rising operational costs. Despite the hurdles, adapting to changes and clear communication during handover processes have been essential for project success.
Mind Games
Here I discuss the intricacies of managing client expectations when it comes to lighting design. I emphasise the challenge of conveying virtual designs to clients who may struggle to fully grasp the envisioned outcome until the final installation. This process involves skillful communication and diplomacy, especially when it comes to addressing any discrepancies between the initial design and the client's expectations. Mastering these "mind games" is crucial for fostering long-term relationships with clients.
The Melanopic Ratio and Lighting Design
As a lighting designer, delving into the realm of melanopic lux opened my eyes to the hidden impact of light on our circadian rhythms. The Melanopic Ratio (MR) became my guide, revealing how light truly affects our body clock. Understanding this ratio has revolutionised my approach, allowing me to craft designs that not only illuminate but also harmonise with our biological rhythms.
AI-Driven Vascular Illumination
I find this innovative AI driven vascular illumination technology fascinating. It allows visualisation of veins to assist clinicians in medical interventions, posing intriguing possibilities for architectural lighting. The technology's potential to create dynamic signage, interactive illumination, and visualize environmental elements like heat and humidity is truly thought-provoking. This cross-fertilization of lighting applications ideas is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of architectural lighting.
The Changing Media Landscape
The subject for this blog was triggered by an email congratulating our company with winning another award and offering us space in their magazine to share the success with the lighting industry. The problem here however was that it was not really an offer to feature our project, but an invitation to pay to have an article featured in their magazine.
Aging
As I grow older, I've come to realize that aging brings about various challenges as a lighting designer. It's not just about the technical aspects but also the human side of things. Adapting to the ever-changing world, maintaining good sight, and managing hearing are crucial. Additionally, prioritising overall health, managing stress, and staying mentally fit are essential to continue delivering exceptional lighting designs. Despite the challenges, I feel blessed to still be fit, healthy, and full of energy, with plenty of goals to accomplish. I'd love to hear from both the young and old about their experiences.
