Welcome to my 'Read' page, your digital library for delving into the illuminating universe of lighting design through the written word.
Here lies a treasure trove of thought-provoking ideas, accounts of my professional experiences, and analyses of evolving industry trends, all encapsulated in my regular blog posts. A bit of ‘light’ reading to take you on the journey with me as I express all my thoughts in writing and along the way, guide you through the often charismatic world of lighting design.
Light Poverty
In light of ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, it's crucial to ponder the impact of lighting design in a world where millions lack proper lighting. While luxury lighting design thrives, over 1 billion people live with minimal or no light, highlighting a stark imbalance. As lighting designers, it's essential to contemplate our contribution to addressing light poverty and reconsider how to utilise our skills and resources to make a meaningful impact.
Small is Beautiful
A small project can sometimes be more challenging than a high-end multi-star development. In fact, a recent project involved re-lighting a wine tasting cellar at Cape Mentelle, which won an Award of Excellence. The project required creative thinking and a small budget, but had a big impact on both the client and the public. Despite the effort involved in big projects, the focus on coordination and coordination management skills can be appealing.
The Importance of Service
In our recent project in the Maldives, we faced slow response and reluctance from a supplier to replace a faulty underwater light. It took almost a year, and our proactive intervention ensures satisfaction.
That Warm Incandescent Feeling
The struggle with LED technology and its inconsistent colour quality, dimming, and light distribution compared to old lighting sources.
Non-Disclosure Agreements in Lighting Design
High profile projects might involve high levels of confidentiality like working on the Palace of the Sultan of Brunei
Lighting as Brand Identity
Brands have outlets around the world, lighting can be a key factor to promote the company’s brand identity
The cost of sunrise: wake-up programming
The overnight flight used lighting sets to induce sleep or awaken travelers subtly, similar to a sunrise.

I discuss the commercialisation of lighting design awards and supporting onsite visits for judgement and winning on real merit.
