As someone who started in lighting design before computers existed, communicating via telex and fax, carrying blueprints and magazine-cut mood boards to meetings, I find myself amazed to be facing the AI revolution in my career's sunset. Having witnessed the evolution from incandescent lamps to smart lighting, I believe we must embrace this AI tsunami thoughtfully. While it can streamline our mundane tasks, we need to understand its applications and maintain our role as creators. The challenge isn't just about using AI, but preserving our intellectual integrity while adapting to this transformative technology.

As an AI-integrating lighting designer, I believe declaring AI use fosters trust and educates about its capabilities and limits. AI boosts efficiency, optimises designs, and sparks innovation. Companies like LightStanza enhance their tools with AI. Yet, AI has constraints; it lacks the human touch.
Lux Futurum
I was truly impressed by the recent Lux Futurum promotional events held across China. Each gathering in cities like Xian and Shanghai showcased professionalism, with large audiences and expertly guided presentations, translated seamlessly. The atmosphere was electric, and the engagement with sponsors was invaluable. China: A Land of a Lot of People…and Opportunities
I’m toured China for the Lux Futurum promo tour, a collaboration with the Virtual Lighting Design Community and the Zhurong Awards. Every visit, I’m amazed by the sheer scale of everything; even in a second-tier city like Nanjing, I encountered a train station with 24 platform gates! The country has transformed from a hub of copiers to a cradle of innovation, especially in lighting design. I can’t wait to see what’s new on this trip!
