Light Talk 2 - 16 Years in the Life of Light [PDF ]

Even though this book was published nearly 10 years after "Light Talk: A Year In The Life Of Light" saw its first light, Martin’s second book can be considered a prequel as it covers a period starting back from 2003, well before Martin started to blog in 2009. Similarly to A Year In The Life Of Light, this book is a compilation of Martin’s more than 16 years of writing in Lighting Today Magazine, a magazine about world actualities in the lighting industry, published out of Singapore.

Practically from the beginning Martin has been hosting his column sharing his insights and views about the lighting design industry with his readers. Light Talk 2: 16 Years In The Life Of Light, offers an incredible insight on how the industry has evolved right from the early days of LED technology making its way into our daily life up to the new smart world we live in today.

In early 2003 Martin was approached to be a columnist for Lighting Today Magazine. They were looking for a columnist to provide a perspective and reflection on “today’s“ world of lighting. He was taken with the idea and the opportunity to reflect on lighting in a broader sense from his perspective as a lighting designer. Martin's first “Reflections” was published in April 2003.

The magazine originally appeared only twice a year, but gradually grew to be issued three times a year and from 2008 onwards it was published as a quarterly magazine. Martin's reflections were driven by events in his daily work as a lighting designer, the technical evolution of lighting (we were just entering the age of LED lighting) and general economic and cultural lighting issues that people encounter in their daily lives.

The aim of the reflections has always been to share Martin's experiences as a lighting designer, as seen through his eyes. General in nature, generic in its approach it never has the intention to be right or to prove wrong, just to provide an opinion. As the collection of articles cover a period of more than 16 years, it is specifically interesting to read the reflections in relation to the years it was written in. Certainly with what we know today it offers a great “back to the future” look on how the lighting industry in general and the lighting design profession more specifically was evolving over time.
