Light + Building 2024 Frankfurt

As I wrapped up my time at the Light and Building Fair in Frankfurt, memories flooded back from my last visit in 2018. The journey back after six years revealed a transformed landscape. Post-COVID, some manufacturers had bid farewell, while others had shifted from the familiar setting of Hall 3 to the new grounds of Hall 5.

Upon arrival, the need for an exploratory tour to grasp the altered lay of the land became evident. Amidst the changes, a pattern emerged - a keen focus on sustainability and environmental impact within the realm of lighting design. Companies embraced concepts like TM66 and the circular economy, showcasing their dedication to reducing their ecological footprint. Lux per watt emerged as the new language, emphasizing the efficient use of light, a shift from the traditional lumens per watt measure.

Moreover, the evolution continued with the introduction of lumens per kilo - a metric revealing the light output efficiency relative to the weight of the fixture. This innovation aimed at reducing material usage while maintaining performance. Exciting advancements in wireless controls and color correction added layers to the narrative, hinting at a revolution in lighting possibilities.

As I absorbed these nuanced changes, I pondered on their implications for my own work. Each step forward in the industry's evolution sparked curiosity and a drive to analyze, adapt, and apply these newfound insights in my lighting design journey. The Fair had not only showcased innovation but had sparked a renewed passion and dedication within me, setting the stage for a creative path ahead.

As I reflected on the transformative changes at the Light and Building Fair, a pivotal moment arrived when I finally met my mentee, Cristina Martinez, in person after nearly a year of mentoring her as part of the Silhouette Awards Mentoring Program. It was a deeply moving experience as we sat down for a chat, joined by Palavi from Ledflex, a key sponsor of the program. The meeting underscored the impact of mentorship and the joy of nurturing talent in the industry.

Amidst the event, the Klaasen Lighting Design team immersed themselves in the displays, exploring the interactive exhibits and absorbing the latest in lighting design. The gallery captured our interactions with various stands and the vibrancy of the fair.

The excitement further peaked at the Aero booth, where the Virtual Lighting Design Community gathered for a lively and buzzing party. The atmosphere was electric, highlighting the unity and passion within the community. Overall, the experience was a tapestry of innovation, connection, and celebration, setting the stage for new beginnings and creative endeavors.
